Developing project objectives that effectively guide the organization toward successful delivery is a daunting task. It is even more complex because both business and project objectives can evolve over a project’s lifecycle. If not managed properly, these changes can significantly reduce the value derived from a project.

To ensure proper alignment and maximize project value, there are three critical elements that project leaders must consider:

1. Realistic evaluation of options upfront: Before diving into a project, thoroughly assessing all available options is crucial. This initial step sets the foundation for aligning project objectives with business goals.

2. A method to update and cross-walk business and project objectives: As objectives change, a systematic approach to updating and reconciling business and project objectives is essential. This ensures that the project remains aligned with current business needs.

3. Regular review of project premise at each stage gate: Projects and our approach evolve. Reviewing the project premise at each stage gate allows for necessary adjustments and maintains alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

Maintaining this alignment is vital for a healthy project system. It’s not just about starting right; it’s about staying on track. After each project, it is valuable to compare and evaluate what has been commissioned in the field relative to its objectives. This reflection process provides insights for future improvements and helps maintain long-term alignment between projects and business goals.
