September 24, 2021 by VP, Research, Benchmarking, and Predictive Analytics Dr. Shawn Hansen is the Vice President of Research, Benchmarking, and Predictive Analytics for Asset Performance Networks, based out of the company’s office in Bethesda, Maryland. Drawing on his extensive consulting experience, Dr. Hansen has helped numerous organizations improve project management, implement risk management, and strengthen the performance of strategic projects & plant based project systems.In his current role, Dr. Hansen developed the Value and Competitiveness Assessment of Plant-Based Project Systems (VCAP), an AP-Networks service that helps companies improve the business value of small projects. In addition to leading VCAP engagements, Dr. Hansen leads consulting engagements that improve project portfolio management practices and implement project performance measurement. He also leads stage-gate reviews for strategic projects, and benchmarking efforts for project management systems.Dr. Hansen has completed empirically based cost, schedule, and performance risk analyses for more than 100 major capital projects. He has also executed Monte Carlo simulations of cost and schedule risk at critical stages throughout the lifecycles of client programs and projects. Through these analyses, Dr. Hansen has helped clients mitigate project delivery risks and optimize project delivery, enabling them to pursue high return projects.Prior to joining AP-Networks, Dr. Hansen worked as a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he helped the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implement Enterprise Risk Management for the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). In this capacity, he conducted analyses to identify programmatic risks, and determined the potential impact of these risks on the business case of potential alternatives. He also helped the FAA develop mitigation plans to address NextGen’s strategic risks.Before joining Booz Allen Hamilton, Dr. Hansen managed capital project benchmarking and consulting for the Refining and Petrochemicals Business Area of Independent Project Analysis. In this role, he worked with engineering organizations and senior leadership to help companies improve the management of their capital projects. He also helped clients improve capital project systems and identify opportunities to improve execution of individual projects. In addition, he conducted research to identify best practices that improved business outcomes and return on investment. His clients included integrated oil companies, independent refiners, national oil companies, and commodity chemical companies.Dr. Hansen holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University. He has completed post-doctoral research at Eindhoven University of Technology.
