Gordon Lawrence is the Practice Area Manager of Major Capital Project Consulting for AP-Networks around the globe. He is based out of the Amsterdam office. Gordon has more than 30 years of experience in project management and project consulting in the oil & gas, LNG, petrochemical, nuclear, and pharmaceutical industries. In his time at AP-Networks, Gordon has earned a reputation for being the “go to” person for troubled projects requiring effective and significant intervention in order to get back on track.

Since joining AP-Networks, Gordon has been involved in the majority of the company’s capital project consulting work. He has led multiple project reviews using AP-Networks’ Project Excellence and Assurance Consulting (PEAC) system, and provided independent advice on Final Investment Decision (FID) design packages. He has also developed capital project work processes and project development procedures for numerous clients. He works regularly with AP-Networks’ Risk Management Practice Leader Steve Jewell, providing Independent Project Risk Workshops, Schedule Estimate Risk Analyses (SERA), and Cost Estimate Risk Analyses (CERA). His work has taken him to every continent except Antarctica.

In addition to his capital project work, Gordon is heavily involved in turnaround consulting. He has led numerous turnaround reviews across the globe, including Turnaround Assist Programs (T-AP), Upstream Turnaround Assist Programs (uT-AP), and Integrated Turnaround Assist Programs (iT-AP). He has also published research on cost estimating for turnarounds, on integrating capital projects into turnarounds, and on the use of different contract payment strategies for turnarounds.

Prior to joining AP-Networks, Gordon worked as a project engineer, project manager, and senior project manager in both owner and contractor organizations. Among these was Novartis, a Swiss Pharmaceutical company, where Gordon managed projects in Switzerland and China. While at Novartis, he also upgraded the departmental project estimating tools and acted as the company representative to the Construction Industry Institute (CII) benchmarking initiative. He also worked for Jacobs Engineering on projects in Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and India. Additionally, he worked as a Senior Consultant at Independent Project Analysis (IPA), a reputable capital projects benchmarking firm. At IPA, he developed and introduced location adjustment procedures for cost data analysis.

Gordon is a Chartered Engineer in the UK, a registered professional engineer in the European Union, a Fellow of the UK Institution of Chemical Engineers, a Member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and a Member of the Institution of Engineering & Technology. He is also an active member of the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering – International, and a past member of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering. On behalf of the IChemE, he regularly interviews graduate engineers to assess their readiness to become Chartered Engineers.

Gordon holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland, a master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering from Birmingham University, England, and an MBA from Strathclyde University Business School in Glasgow, Scotland. He has published numerous articles and conference papers on methods for improving project and turnaround systems. He has been invited to review technical books and is a contributor to an upcoming Recommended Practice on cost estimating at the AACE-I.
